Welcome to ASPBAE's YAR E-Manual

"Girls in my village do not have permission to roam around. We could not even step out of our homes on our own. But when I began to work as a Shodhini, we began to conduct a census of all the girls in our village. This meant that we were exploring the different corners of the village on our own. It was a huge learning experience."

Manisha Gangode, Shodhini, Abhivyakti Media for Development, India

This E-Manual has emerged from ASPBAE’s continued engagement with youth, to empower marginalised young people across the Asia Pacific region, to amplify youth voices to reach national regional and global policy forums on education and lifelong learning. Since 2016, ASPBAE, in collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), started work with its partners in India, Philippines and Indonesia, and later expanded to other countries in the region to mobilise and train youth researchers from marginalised communities. The youth researchers have been leading action research that builds knowledge on young people’s educational experiences and learning needs.

In the past few years, ASPBAE and its members in a number of countries in the Asia Pacific region have mobilised diverse youth from marginalised communities to lead and conduct action research in their communities. The youth have collected and analysed data, written reports based on their findings, and presented these findings to various stakeholders and audiences. The country partners have facilitated the dissemination of the youth researchers’ findings and recommendations to government bodies, national policy forums and in larger civil society spaces.

What are the goals of the YAR E-Manual?

  1. To develop capacities of the youth to do action research and enable them to become knowledge producers in their local communities.
  2. To generate the youth’s perspectives on education programmes and strategies to benefit marginalised youth.
